Tyrese Gibson Says One Role Still Haunts Him: Bringing Teddy Pendergrass’ Life to the Big Screen

Tyrese Gibson has built a multifaceted career spanning music, film, and television, but there is one role he says continues to weigh heavily on him—the chance to portray soul legend Teddy Pendergrass in a biographical film.

Appearing recently on TD Jakes’ NXT Chapter podcast, the singer and actor spoke candidly about the project that remains unfinished in his mind. When asked whether there was a role he regretted turning down, Tyrese clarified that this story was not about regret, but about a promise he still hopes to fulfill.

“This is the movie that keeps me up at night,” he said, referring to the long-discussed Pendergrass biopic.

Tyrese’s connection to the late singer goes far beyond professional admiration. He revealed that he spent nearly six years closely connected to Pendergrass before his passing and was even a pallbearer at his funeral. According to Tyrese, the legendary vocalist personally selected him to tell his story on screen.

The decision, he explained, was rooted in authenticity rather than imitation.

“He told me, ‘You’re the only person who could play me,’” Tyrese recalled. “‘Not because you want to be me, but because you don’t.’”

Pendergrass, known for fiercely protecting his legacy, reportedly had no interest in seeing his life portrayed by someone who had built their identity around copying his sound, appearance, or performance style. Instead, he wanted an actor who understood the man behind the music—his struggles, growth, and humanity.

That distinction was crucial. Tyrese explained that Pendergrass did not want a performer who had been shaped to resemble him in every detail, but someone capable of honoring his journey without losing their own identity in the process.

At one stage, the biopic appeared to be gaining momentum. Tyrese shared that filmmaker Lee Daniels, a fellow Philadelphia native and longtime admirer of Pendergrass, had been attached to direct the project.

However, the film has since stalled. Tyrese described the current status as a “gray area,” pointing to unresolved creative challenges that have temporarily halted progress.

Despite the uncertainty, his dedication remains unchanged.

“I hope and I pray that I can keep the promise I made to him,” Tyrese said. “That I’m going to tell his story.”
